Donald Trump must win Florida to win the White House, analysts say, but a new poll shows Hillary Clinton leading in the Sunshine State.
A Suffolk University survey released Thursday shows Democrat Clinton beating Republican Trump in a two-way race:
- Clinton: 48 percent;
- Trump: 42 percent;
- Undecided: 9 percent
Clinton also leads Trump when two minor-party candidates, Libertarian Gary Johnson and the Green Party's Jill Stein, are added:
- Clinton: 43 percent;
- Trump: 39 percent;
- Johnson: 4 percent;
- Stein: 3 percent;
- Undecided: 11 percent.
The party breakdown of voters in Florida is:
- Democrat: 38 percent;
- Republican: 36 percent;
- Unaffiliated: 26 percent.
"Hillary Clinton is leading thanks to southern Florida and women," said David Paleologos, who directs Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston. "Trump is even seeing some Republicans holding back at this point while Clinton is a bit stronger among registered Democrats."
When asked if they were supporting their chosen candidate or against an opponent:
- Clinton Voters for Clinton: 67 percent;
- Clinton Voters against Trump: 28 percent;
- Trump Voters for Trump: 52 percent;
- Trump Voters against Clinton: 39 percent.
Multiple state polls released Thursday show Clinton leading Trump in important battlegrounds, including New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
Suffolk University surveyed 500 likely voters in Florida by phone from August 1-3 and the results have a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percentage points.
