Former Rep. Ron Paul said he believes that if Congress defeats President Barack Obama's call for a military strike against Syria it would be a "historic event."
"I think there's a historic event going on here and if this vote is won, that is defeat [of] the request to have a more military approach to Syria, I think it will be historic because it would be a grand coalition of the Libertarian Republicans and the Democratic Progressives," the Texas Republican, a 2012 presidential candidate, said Thursday on MSNBC's "NOW with Alex Wagner."

Paul, known for his libertarian views and opposition to U.S. intervention in foreign countries, said he hopes to see different factions from the two major parties join forces over Syria.
"Everybody's worried about the split in the Democrats, the split in the Republicans," he stated. "I'm delighted with that split because it's pushing people together who are on opposite ends of the spectrum, one which I enjoy."
Paul earlier used his weekly column to argue strenuously against military action in Syria, noting that the fact the president had followed the Constitution by seeking the support of Congress was no reason alone for lawmakers to back his request.
"Every member ought to vote against this reckless and immoral use of the U.S. military," he wrote. "But even if every single member and senator votes for another war, it will not make this terrible idea any better because some sort of nod is given to the Constitution along the way.”
