House Speaker Paul Ryan addressed Wednesday's shooting, in which a Republican congressman and others were injured, on the floor Wednesday saying Congress is "united," Fox News reports.
"We are united in our shock. We are united in our anguish," he said. "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us."
He added, "We do not shed our humanity when we enter this chamber," Ryan said, describing lawmakers as a "family" and asking colleagues to resolve to "come together."
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, congressional staffer Zachary Barth, lobbyist Matt Mika and Capitol Police Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Greiner were wounded in the attack on practice for the GOP baseball team in Alexandria, Va..
"Without these two heroes, Agent Bailey and Agent Griner, many lives would have been lost," Ryan said, according to CBS News.
"We do not shed our humanity when we enter this chamber. For all the noise and fury, we are one family," he added, saying that humanity "will win the day and it always will."
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi followed Ryan, praising his "beautiful" remarks.
"We are not one caucus or the other in this House today but we speak for each other in saying that we send our thoughts and prayers to our colleague Steve Scalise," she said, adding that the congressional baseball game scheduled for Thursday will proceed.
"Tomorrow, we'll go into the field, we'll root for our team and we will use this occasion as one that brings us together and not separate us further."
