House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi slammed President Donald Trump's agreement with North Korea as "preserving the regime's status quo" in the reclusive nation.
Trump signed a deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un overnight and said Kim will quickly start to denuclearize. Democrats such as Pelosi and others, however, are jumping on the historic summit and claim that Trump provided too many concessions.
"Nuclear nonproliferation is a pillar of America's national security. We respect any serious and real diplomatic efforts to achieve that goal on the Korean peninsula," Pelosi said in a statement.
"Apparently, the president handed Kim Jong Un concessions in exchange for vague promises that do not approach a clear and comprehensive pathway to denuclearization and non-proliferation.
"In his haste to reach an agreement, President Trump elevated North Korea to the level of the United States while preserving the regime's status quo. The millions of families currently living in fear of nuclear weapons in the region deserve strong and smart leadership built on diplomacy and engagement with our regional partners and allies."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer aired his thoughts about the deal in a Senate floor speech Tuesday morning.
"It's imperative that we actually get action here. Not just photo ops. Unfortunately, the entire document [Trump and Kim signed] is short on details," Schumer said.
"There is a great fear now that Chairman Kim, having won a major concession from the United States — meeting with our president — may not go any further" toward denuclearization.
Other voices on the left chimed in as well, some after seeing Trump's praise of Kim — a dictator who is suspected of ordering the killing of several people, including members of his own family, starving the people of North Korea, maintaining several brutal prison camps, and other human rights-related issues.
"When it comes to North Korea, we can’t trust – we must verify. But this anemic agreement provides no details, no verification, and is less of an accomplishment than anything any previous administration ever negotiated with Pyongyang," Sen. Bob Menendez said in a tweet.
