Mike Pence has been a strong supporter of pro-life, anti-abortion legislation throughout his 15-year career in politics as a U.S. congressman and governor.
It's an unwavering record that will no doubt help boost Donald Trump's credibility among conservatives as he prepares to become the Republican Party's 2016 presidential nominee next week.
His legislative moves to strengthen the rights of the unborn began as a congressman on Capitol Hill include:
- In 2003, he voted in favor of a bill to prohibit partial birth/late term, abortions
- In 2005, he voted in favor of the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act
- In 2006, he voted for the Abortion Pain Bill
- In 2009, he voted for a bill prohibiting federally funded abortion service
- In 2011, he voted in favor of a bill to prohibit taxpayer funding of abortion
- In 2011, he voted for a bill to amend the Affordable Care Act to prohibit abortion coverage
- In 2012, he voted in favor of the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act
- As governor of Indiana, he continued his quest to strengthen pro-life laws and lessen abortion rights.
- In 2013, he signed an order requiring an ultrasound prior to the prescription of an abortion-inducing drug
- In 2014, he expanded requirements for abortion providers
- In 2015, he established new rules for the disposition of aborted fetuses
- In 2016, he signed a new law amending abortion regulations
- That recent order, which bans abortions sought because of a fetus' genetic abnormalities, was later blocked by a federal judge.
U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt granted a preliminary injunction sought by Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky,
which argued the law was unconstitutional and violated women's privacy rights.
Pence inked the law in March after it was approved by Indiana's GOP-dominated Legislature —despite the objections of many female lawmakers, including Republicans, who said it went too far.
The 57-year-old governor — who describes himself as "a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order" — once famously declared he would shut down the federal government in 2011 in a bid to defund Planned Parenthood and its abortion services.
