White House: GOP Memo Likely to Be Released Thursday

By    |   Wednesday, 31 January 2018 08:39 PM EST

A Republican memo alleging anti-Trump bias at the FBI and the Department of Justice is likely to be released on Thursday, a White House official said on Wednesday.

The FBI said earlier on Wednesday it had "grave concerns" about the accuracy of the top-secret House Intelligence Committee memo, challenging President Donald Trump's pledge to release it.

The document was written by Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and reportedly talks about how the federal government obtained a FISA warrant to spy on members of the Trump campaign in 2016.

Included in the memo, according to lawmakers who have viewed it, is discussion about the infamous dossier that was put together about then candidate Donald Trump by a British spy. Most of the claims in the scandalous dossier have not been verified, but they point to Trump having ties to Russia.

Many Republicans have been asking the FBI to release the supporting documents that were used to obtain the FISA warrant, as it's suspected that the dossier may have been referenced, at least in part.

Fox News host Sean Hannity cited sources Wednesday night who said the memo could be made public as soon as Thursday or as late as Monday. He also reported that White House officials are pondering the release of the supporting documents used for the FISA warrant, although it wasn't clear if those would be released at the same time as the memo.

In an unusual public statement, the FBI indicated it has "grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy."

Nunes countered the bureau's statement by firing back at the nation's top law enforcement agency for not responding to Congressional requests for information.

"Having stonewalled Congress' demands for information for nearly a year, it's no surprise to see the FBI and DOJ issue spurious objections to allowing the American people to see information related to surveillance abuses at these agencies," Nunes said.

CNN reported Wednesday night that the FBI may recommend portions of the memo be redacted because of the FBI's concerns with it.

The Department of Justice and several committees on Capitol Hill are investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia. No evidence has been made public that suggests collusion occurred, although special counsel Robert Mueller's probe has resulted in four indictments. The aforementioned FISA warrant played a central role in kickstarting the investigation.

Mueller is reportedly planning to interview Trump soon, which the president said he welcomes. His lawyers, however, said the final decision about whether he sits down with Mueller's team lies in their hands.

Some on the right claim that the Russia investigation was created on fake intelligence and that rogue FBI officials pushed for it after Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 presidential election.

Text messages between two FBI officials before and after the election have revealed an anti-Trump bias. Both officials worked on the Clinton email investigation that resulted in no charges being filed. They also worked on Mueller's Russia probe for a brief time.

FBI director Christopher Wray traveled to Capitol Hill Sunday to read the memo. On Monday, FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe was forced out of his job. McCabe is reportedly mentioned in a forthcoming Department of Justice Inspector General report that claims some within the bureau mishandled the Clinton investigation.
