A 20-year-old Saudi Arabian man who was considered a “person of interest” in the Boston Marathon bombings is no longer a suspect, Rep. Mike McCaul said on Tuesday.
“The Saudi lead, that washed out,” McCaul, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told Fox’s Greta Van Susteren. “That lead washed out.”
“We have other leads,” the Texas Republican added. “That’s why we’re asking a lot of people to come forward with what they might have seen.”
The man, who was injured in the blast, was questioned on Monday at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he was being treated.
Authorities later executed a search warrant on his home in Revere, a Boston suburb, The Boston Globe reports.
But by Tuesday afternoon, the man was no longer considered a suspect, the Globe reports.
“He’s just a victim,” a law-enforcement official told the Globe. “He appears not to be involved.”
No arrests have been made in the blasts that killed three and injured 176 others, including 17 who remain in critical condition.
Meanwhile, McCaul told Van Susteren that the investigation was continuing and that authorities were examining one of pressure cooker bombs found at the scene.
“We know that this is an act of terrorism,” he said. We don’t know whether it is foreign or domestic, and we’re examining the bomb.
“This is the biggest thing since 9/11 on American soil — and that’s why we have to get to the bottom of this.”
