Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has condemned Donald Trump's remarks about women on a 2005 videotape that was leaked Friday, but he has not pulled his support for the Republican nominee.
Rubio, who is seeking a second term this fall, posted this tweet on Friday after the tape was reported by The Washington Post:
However, the senator has said nothing further, USA Today reports. He and Trump clashed during the primaries.
A bevy of Republicans, including Arizona Sen. John McCain and Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, have pulled their support for Trump.
Rubio is slightly ahead of Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy in their race.
As such, not withdrawing support for Trump right away might be the "politically smart thing to do," Aubrey Jewett, a political science professor at the University of South Florida, told USA Today.
"Right now, a lot of Trump supporters in Florida are certainly supporting Marco Rubio," Jewett said. "If he completely closes the door on Donald Trump and says, 'I’m not voting for him, I’m not supporting him' and that sort of thing, then he runs the risk of losing some of those supporters."
