Rep. Louie Gohmert Tuesday applauded the growing number of governors who say they
do not want Syrian refugees in their states, pointing out that it would be extremely difficult to vet them first.
"We're working with a blank here," the Texas Republican told
Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program. "It is good the governors are concerned; [it] shows once again the best government is closer to the people because our president doesn't have a clue."
He pointed out that FBI Director James Comey has testified there is a large database for Iraqis coming in, as there have been fingerprints and more collected, but the same doesn't hold true for Syria.
Gohmert also said he agrees with a
letter written by Rep. Michael McCaul, who chairs the House Committee on Homeland Security, on Monday to President Barack Obama, that urges caution when allowing refugees, given the current high threat environment.
"When the FBI director himself says we have ISIS operating in every state, we know they're in every state," said Gohmert. "They could have simultaneous hits and the president is still refusing to acknowledge that it is radical Islam."
The government, he continued, is in place to protect the people of the United States and make sure they are safe.
"That's the number one charge, protect against all enemies foreign and domestic," said Gohmert. "He's too concerned about global warming and climate change, those kind of things."
