The framework for an Iran nuclear deal announced Thursday will not be President Barack Obama's "Nixon-to-China" foreign policy legacy as he hopes, but it is a political win for him, says National Review Online's Jonah Goldberg.
Obama's White House statement was a signal to Democrats that he achieved enough for them not to join Republicans in opposing the deal, Goldberg said Thursday on Fox News Channel's
"Special Report."
"You have enough here not to abandon me, not to do all the shenanigans that you're tempted to do," Goldberg said. "By the way, look at Robert Menendez being carted off. That might send a message, too."
Menendez, a Democratic senator from New Jersey, was indicted this week on charges of using his office to aid a friend, but many say it will be difficult to prove a quid pro quo and that the charges might stem from Menendez opposing Obama on the Iran talks and easing relations with Cuba.
Goldberg said the actual substance of the Iran deal is "disastrous," because Iran gets to keep the underground nuclear facility at Fordo if it is used only for non-weapons enrichment.
"It is like Dr. Evil saying I get to keep my death ray 'cause I just want it for target shooting," Goldberg said.
