Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Sunday that former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg won't enter the presidential race as an independent since the major parties won't end up nominating Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders anyway.
It was reported on Saturday that Bloomberg was considering a run for just that reason.
But Bush, appearing on CNN's
"State of the Union," said, "that's not going to happen.
Bloomberg won't get into the race "unless it's Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders," Bush told ABC's
"This Week."
"The party process is going to work far differently than what the pundits are saying," Bush said. "Mike Bloomberg is a good man. We disagree on a whole lot of things but he's a good person and a patriot and wants the best for the country. But we have differing views. I want to be the conservative candidate to lead the conservative party into the general election."
Bush said he is focused on winning the nomination himself, though polls show him in the single digits in the large GOP field.
His brother, former President George W. Bush is set to join him on the campaign trail, Bush told CNN, but the details have yet to be worked out.
Bush fired back at Trump, who belittled an ad made by Bush's mother, former first lady Barbara Bush, in support of her son. Trump said Bush's mother won't be able to negotiate with the Islamic State (ISIS) for her son.
"Donald Trump has no clue how the world works," Bush told CNN. "There's no negotiating with ISIS. We need to have a strategy to destroy it. And the fact he would negotiate with ISIS is pretty scary thought as well."
