The House Select Committee on Benghazi is focused on Hillary Clinton and it's a "totally political operation," longtime Clinton advisor James Carville said Thursday, shortly before the former secretary of state was to take the stand for a long-anticipated questioning session.
"Does anybody really think this is not politically motivated? Carville said on
MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program, denying that Democrats have smeared the purpose of the committee and saying it "smeared itself."
"That is what [House Majority Leader] Kevin McCarthy said; this is what
[Rep. Richard] Hanna said," Carville commented.
"What the lifelong Republican said, 'it was just a witch hunt,'" said Carville, repeating Hanna's comments.
"That's all they did, and sat around, and it was all about how to get Hillary," he continued. [Benghazi Committee Chairman] Trey Gowdy said on Fox to Chris Wallace that [Hillary's] emails didn't have anything to do with Benghazi. Let me ask you a question, is this the seventh or eighth committee to investigate Benghazi?"
And as it's agreed that the operation is political, he continued, "we should go from there."
He predicted that Clinton will "do fine" in the hearing, but still, "we know now this is politically motivated, we agree that this is a politically motivated, taxpayer-funded political operation."
