Republicans Push for IRS Official's Firing

By    |   Monday, 20 May 2013 03:36 PM EDT

Even if she can't be fired because of her civil service status, President Barack Obama still has a number of options for dealing with IRS official Sarah Hall Ingram because of the targeting of conservative groups, according to former presidential assistant Brad Blakeman.

"He can require the Treasury Department to act against her, they can put her on leave, they can take her out of this position until she's given a full and fair hearing," the former deputy assistant to George W. Bush said Monday afternoon on Fox News' "America Live."

The IRS is accused of unfairly targeting conservative, tea party, and pro-Israel groups seeking nonprofit status. It's believed that the scrutiny began during Hall Ingram's tenure as head of the agency's tax exempt office. She now heads the IRS division responsible for overseeing the tax rules and penalties associated with Obamacare.

In the interview with Fox, Blakeman claimed that Hall Ingram was either "ignorant" of the targeting effort, "encouraged it, or turned a blind eye to it."

Acting IRS Director Steve Miller was forced to resign shortly after the scandal came to a head last week. But as a civil servant, not a political appointee, Obama cannot fire Hall Ingram.

But Blakeman said "Congress has a constitutional obligation of oversight and she should be hauled down before them to explain her actions," at the very least.
