The chairman of the House committee investigating the attacks in Benghazi, Libya is defending the committee's work after a second Republican colleague said the investigation was designed in part "to go after" Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina said Thursday that comments by Rep. Richard Hanna of New York were "unfortunate" and misinformed.
Gowdy says the investigation is being done in a "private, fact-centric way." He says commentators and even members of his own caucus say things "on matters on which they are not familiar."
Hanna's comments were the latest setback for the panel.
It earlier came under fire after comments by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and a lawsuit planned by a former staffer who said it was singularly focused on Clinton.
