Glenn Spencer: Union Fears Trump Could Stop Illegals From Entering US

By    |   Friday, 24 July 2015 08:59 PM EDT

Union officials in Washington told local border patrol agents in Texas to not meet with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Thursday because their ranks could be clipped by any success in stopping illegal immigrants from coming into the country, expert Glenn Spencer told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"They're afraid that if he was successful, they could probably cut back on the number of agents by 50 percent — and the union doesn't like that idea," Spencer, chairman of the American Border Patrol, told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "But he's doing a great job in calling attention to these serious problems."

Spencer, whose non-profit group monitors U.S. borders, was referring to officials of the National Border Patrol Council, which is represented by the Washington-based AFL-CIO.

They pressured members of Local 2455 in Laredo, Texas, to abruptly cancel a tour of the border after inviting the billionaire businessman down to get a first-hand look at the situation.

Spencer's organization has invited Trump and other GOP hopefuls to a demonstration of new border technology next month. Invitations went out this week, he said.

"This is technology that you could install from Brownsville, Texas, to San Diego," he told Hayworth. Spencer has lived along the Arizona-Mexico border for 12 years.

"You would know, any time, when anybody approached that border from the south — aircraft, vehicles, people. It's 100 percent reliant, solar-powered, very environmentally benign, and it would do the job of telling us where are we with the border."

"I certainly hope that this is something that our government would get behind," he added. "I don't believe the one that's in power right now is interested in it at all, but it won't be long until we have someone new in there."
