Gingrich: Trayvon Protesters 'Prepared To Be a Lynch Mob'

By    |   Monday, 15 July 2013 04:55 PM EDT

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on Monday that protesters who took to the streets after George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the Trayvon Martin trial were prepared to "be a lynch mob."

Speaking on CNN, Gingrich said, "The fact is that six women sat on a jury for five solid weeks. I watched these protesters, none of whom read the transcript, none of whom sat through five weeks of the trial, all of whom were prepared to basically be a lynch mob."

"They only wanted one verdict and that verdict was guilty," said Gingrich, a candidate for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. "If he had been found guilty does that mean everyone on the other side should go on to the streets, should have thrown things at the police?"

Gingrich was facing off with ex-White House official Van Jones about the race issues raised by the case. Gingrich and Jones will serve as hosts of CNN’s revamped "Crossfire" program when it starts again this fall.
