Donald Trump has a towering presence on social media, with the most followers of any presidential rival on Facebook and in second place on Twitter, according to The Hill.

The news site analyzed all the official campaign social media accounts of the contenders and found that Trump has more than 3 million likes on Facebook, tallying nearly 1 million more than his nearest Republican rival, former pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

He's also significantly ahead of the Democrats. Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders has just over 1 million likes while Hillary Clinton has roughly 1.1 million likes.

On Twitter, Clinton and Trump lead the pack. Clinton edges out Trump with 4.02 million followers while Trump is at 3.67 million. However, Trump is more prolific on Twitter, with 27,400 tweets compared to just 1,304 tweets from Clinton.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is in a distant third place with 811,000 Twitter followers, while Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has 667,000 followers and Sanders has 316,000 followers, each of whom is more active than Clinton on the social media site.

Trump also dominates on Instagram. His account boasts 293,000 followers compared to Clinton's 217,000 followers. But Republican Govs. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Chris Christie of New Jersey are the most active on the social platform with 431 photos and 393 photos, respectively.

"Social media is playing a prominent role in the 2016 campaign, with candidates using it to directly reach out to voters and share their message. Trump has used Twitter to hammer away at his critics and Clinton has used it to weigh in on top issues," The Hill said.

"And social media provides a snapshot of the race, with other candidates surging following last week's first GOP debate."

Interest in Ben Carson skyrocketed following the first presidential debate — he had a total of 3,270,574 social media interactions that week, more than Trump and Sanders at 2,023,562 and 1,889,876, respectively.

And former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina also surged after her performance during the early debate. In the past week, she has seen a 50 percent increase in followers for a total of 240,837 likes on Facebook. And her overall social media interactions skyrocketed 68.4 percent, The Hill said.

Overall, Trump shows the most prowess on social media. Over the past 30 days, he had the Facebook post with the most engagement. In a July 18 post, he said that it was a "national embarrassment" that illegal immigrants receive healthcare while veterans on are waiting lists.

That post received 704,197 likes, 52,907 comments, and 183,444 shares, The Hill reported.
