President Donald Trump questioned global warming during a wide-ranging interview that aired Sunday, saying claims of melting ice caps haven’t come true.
"The ice caps were going to melt, they were going to be gone by now, but now they’re setting records. They’re at a record level," Trump said during an interview with Piers Morgan that aired on Britain’s ITV News.
The president also said the world was cooling and warming at the same time.
"There is a cooling, and there’s a heating. I mean, look, it used to not be climate change, it used to be global warming. That wasn’t working too well because it was getting too cold all over the place," Trump said.
Last year was the planet’s third-warmest year on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with average temperatures across global land and ocean surfaces reaching 54.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
Arctic sea ice levels also reached a record low in 2017, according to NASA, with combined Arctic and Antarctic sea ice numbers at their lowest point since satellites started measuring sea ice in 1979.
Trump in June of last year announced the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, but told Morgan he would consider re-entering into the accord if a better deal was constructed for the United States.
