Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said he'd be happy to bring Ohio Gov. John Kasich into his campaign should he decide to give up his own quest for the Republican presidential nomination.
Appearing Monday on
Fox News Channel's "Special Report," Cruz said he doesn't understand Kasich's path for the nomination since he can no longer mathematically reach the 1,237 delegates needed to get the nomination on a first convention ballot.
Kasich is clearly playing spoiler, hoping to sway enough delegates his way if he can prevent either Cruz or front-runner Donald Trump from reaching 1,237.
Cruz was asked by a Fox viewer via Twitter whether he would consider teaming up with Kasich to stop Trump. Cruz indicated he would want to be at the top of such a ticket.
"I'll say I would certainly welcome John Kasich being part of that team coming together and uniting," he said. "I think it's the path a lot of other people are taking and I would welcome him being part of that team."
Addressing free trade, Cruz sounded much like Trump saying America is "getting killed on trade deals" by China and other countries. He admitted to reversing course on his previous support of Trade Promotion Authority because, he said, circumstances changed.
"Two things in particular have changed," he said. "WikiLeaks released the text of the Trade in Services Agreement that included major provisions affecting immigration, allowing global corporations to bring in immigrants circumventing our immigration laws. I'm strongly opposed to that. … And secondly, we saw leadership in Washington cut a deal to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, a classic example of corporate welfare and cronyism as the price for TPA."
