Sen. Ted Cruz – who joined a chorus of GOP critics denouncing Donald Trump's lewd remarks about groping women on a 2005 video – is considering whether to rescind his endorsement of the party's nominee, BuzzFeed News reported.
Citing an unnamed source "close to Cruz," the outlet said the discussions were underway between the Texas Republican and his "circle." No announcement was made by Saturday night, and an unnamed aide told BuzzFeed News that Cruz's Friday night "statement stands."
Cruz, after withholding his endorsement of the candidate for weeks, did an about-face in late September, when he said in a Facebook post that he wanted to "keep his word" to vote for the Republican nominee.
"This is a no-brainer," one unnamed GOP strategist told BuzzFeed News.
"His best move was to not endorse. He endorsed, which put him in the worst possible position. Now he’s been given an out to rescind his endorsement for very justifiable reasons. This is a gift. It’s not going to get better than this."
Ironically, if Cruz had withheld support for just a week longer, "He would have been in the catbird seat," the unnamed source added.
In a tweet answering a question from a reporter, Cruz's former communications director Rick Tyler urged Cruz to pull his endorsement.
And Cruz senior adviser Jason Johnson tweeted a photo of himself with his hand over his face when the Trump tape story broke on Friday.
Johnson also retweeted Utah Sen. Mike Lee’s video urging Trump to step down, and retweeted former Cruz running mate Carly Fiorina’s statement urging the same.
