Authorities Plan Controlled Explosion at Apartment Tied to Boston Bombing

State Police Colonel Timothy Alben alerted the public that bomb experts would be conducting controlled explosions on Norfolk Street in Cambridge, Mass., Friday afternoon in the house where the two brothers responsible for the Boston Marathon bombings lived, saying the explosions would ensure the investigators’ safety, The Boston Globe reports.

“There has been no apprehension at this point. This afternoon there will be a controlled explosion by some of the explosive ordinance folks in Cambridge. It’s done out of abundance of caution before they enter a premises there,” Alben said.

Boston Gov. Deval Patrick made an unprecedented move Friday morning asking residents of the greater metropolitan Boston area to “shelter in place” and not to open their doors to anyone except for police carrying proper identification as the hunt for the second marathon bomber continues.

Officials are concerned possible accomplices could also try to take action, The Wall Street Journal reports.
