Donald Trump has never faced as "formidable" a debate opponent as Hillary Clinton – and won't be able to use the tactics that worked for him during the primaries, according to the Democratic nominee's chief campaign strategist.
In an interview to be aired Sunday with radio host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable," Joel Benenson noted Trump has never debated anyone one-on-one.
"I think the big question is can Donald go toe-to-toe with someone as formidable as Hillary Clinton?" Benenson said, The Hill reports from excerpts released ahead of the show.
"She's outworked him. She's out-campaigned him. We've run a much stronger campaign."
"This is going to be one on one," he added. "There's going to be no dodging or ducking, none of the stuff that worked for him in the primaries."
The remarks come a little over a month before the first presidential debate, scheduled for Sept. 26 in Hempstead, N.Y.
Benenson said changes in Trump's campaign structure – campaign manager Paul Manafort quit Friday – illustrate the GOP nominee's continuing struggles.
"This is a guy – he just had another campaign shakeup," . He had another resignation. He's firing people. He's on his third campaign manager," Benenson said.
