The Hillary Clinton campaign accused Donald Trump of having potential "ties to foreign espionage" in response to the damaging emails that have been released by WikiLeaks in recent days.

According to Politico, Clinton campaign spokesman Glen Caplin said Trump needs to address the situation. Trump's friend and informal advisor Roger Stone recently said he has "back-channel communications" with WikiLeaks, and the FBI has said Russia may be behind the hack of emails from Clinton and those close to her.

Trump's campaign must "answer for its possible ties to foreign espionage," Caplin said, who described the hack of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta's emails as a "modern-day Watergate."

"It is also now clear that the illegal hack of John Podesta's email is the work of the Russian government, according to the FBI," Caplin added.

Caplin noted Stone's relationship with WikiLeaks is "disturbing," Politico reports.

Stone told NBC News any claims that he is working directly with WikiLeaks in an effort to discredit Clinton and her campaign are false.

"They certainly don't clear or tell me in advance what they're going to do," Stone said.
