Hillary Clinton's communications director Jennifer Palmieri slammed Donald Trump's meeting with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto before his immigration speech to be delivered in Phoenix on Wednesday.
According to Politico, Palmieri issued a statement pointing out Trump's previous comments about Mexico:
"From the first days of his campaign, Donald Trump has painted Mexicans as 'rapists' and criminals and has promised to deport 16 million people, including children and U.S. citizens.
"He has said we should force Mexico to pay for his giant border wall. He has said we should ban remittances to families in Mexico if Mexico doesn't pay up," Palmieri said, referring to money immigrants in the U.S. send home to their families in Mexico.
"What ultimately matters is what Donald Trump says to voters in Arizona, not Mexico, and whether he remains committed to the splitting up of families and deportation of millions."
Clinton spokesman Jesse Ferguson retweeted a Trump message from February 2015:
At the time, Trump was in litigation in Mexico over a Baja resort.
Ahead of his speech about immigration, some in Trump's campaign told Politico he needs to bring in Hispanic and Latino voters to have a chance in Florida, Colorado, and Nevada.
Ted Cruz's former spokesman Rick Tyler said that Trump must craft his speech toward those who are solidly behind him and also attempt to pull in voters who are considering supporting him.
"What he wants to do, of course, is expand his base and get beyond his base, but his base won't let him," Tyler said.
