Chris Christie said Saturday that he would quarantine people coming to the United States from Brazil to help prevent the spread of the Zika virus as he did 2014 with a nurse who had traveled from Africa during the Ebola crisis.

"You belt I would," the New Jersey governor said during the Republican presidential debate at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. "Remember what happened with that nurse.

"She was showing symptoms and coming back from a place that had the Ebola virus active — and she had been treating patients.

"This was not just someone we picked her up just for the heck of it. We did it because she was showing symptoms.

"That's how we should make these decisions," Christie said. "You make the decisions based upon the symptoms, the medicine and the law."

The tests on the nurse — Kaci Hickox, 34, who was working with Doctors Without Borders in Sierra Leone during the crisis — came out negative 48 hours later, the governor said.

"We released her back to the state of Maine."
