Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y., said Donald Trump is "providing a service to this country" in an interview on CNN's "New Day" program, reports The Washington Times.
"When you find a guy like Trump that doesn't play by the rules, that takes advantage of all the people that have jumped over to be anti-Democratic, and he did it under Republican cover," Rangel said.
"What Trump brings to it is that good Republicans and Americans now see that the Republican Party has been used," he continued. "It has been used by bigots, it has been used by honest white folks who believe that blacks and immigrants have been responsible for them not succeeding.
"There's a fight game, the ultimate fighter — they put 'em in cages like wild animals, and they fight each other. And then you have what I love — boxing … if you put in a professional boxer — like politicians are — against a guy that is used to fighting in a cage, without any respect for the truth, any respect for the rules, it's testing the system," Rangel said.
"Whoever thought of this system never thought about someone like Trump," Rangel concluded.
Rangel, a supporter of Hillary Clinton, delivered a harsh critique of Trump during a radio appearance at the beginning of August, although he was apparently unaware that his microphone was live when he spoke.
"He's consistently crazy," Rangel said, according to BuzzFeed News. "It's not like he had a bad day. Every day he tears his [expletive] and reverses himself and contradicts himself."
"This man is about to kill the goose that's producing these eggs," he went on to say. "Poor folks are gonna get screwed anyway, but he's taking down the country with him. I mean, he's done more damn damage to the reputation of our country abroad just by threatening to pull out of NATO."
