Rep. Chaffetz: Syria Deal Doesn't Solve Problem

By    |   Sunday, 15 September 2013 12:39 PM EDT

Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Sunday the civil war brewing in Syria that has killed more than 100,000 of its civilians will continue to grow despite the deal between the United States and Russia over securing the nation's chemical weapons.

"It doesn’t solve the problem," Chaffetz said on CNN's "State of the Union."

California Rep. Adam Schiff said the deal struck to solve the chemical-weapons crisis in Syria is a "positive step," given the diplomatic means by which it was reached.

"This agreement, as tough as it is, holds the promise of taking these weapons off the market," Schiff said on CNN. "If your goal is to use military force … it's a bad deal, but if your goal is to make sure these chemical weapons are never be used again … this is about a good a deal as you can get."

He conceded the Syrian regime will be uncooperative and probably will "delay and obfuscate" the terms of the agreement.

"It's going to be hard, but this is, I think, the best pathway we've seen in the last couple years," Schiff said.
