GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson told supporters in Reno, Nev. his campaign is alive and well, and it's not yet time to crown Donald Trump as the party nominee.
"I am not going to give up,"
the Reno Gazette-Journal reported Carson telling a crowd of about 360 supporters.
"If you call a baseball game based on the first inning, you're going to be wrong most of the time," he said.
Carson vowed to stay in the race after a sixth-place finish Saturday in South Carolina. Carson, who briefly challenged Trump for first place in the polls, came in fourth in Iowa and eighth in New Hampshire.
But he said the narrowing field of candidates will "hopefully" allow for a discussion about "policies and solutions, and not just make it a popularity contest."
One supporter asked Carson if a Trump nomination might cause people to vote for the Democrats' nominee in November.
"That's assuming that (Trump's) the nominee, but I'm not so sure about it," Carson responded. "I think the American people are more sophisticated than the media thinks they are (and) at some point, people are going to look for some real substance."
