Hillary Clinton will win the presidential election, according to the American Statistical Association's (ASA) Prediction 2016 contest.
Ninety-seven percent of more than 450 high school and college students competing predicted Clinton would capture the White House. Entries were sent in from 19 states and more than 30 academic institutions.
The details of the contest showed that:
- Clinton will beat out Donald Trump in electoral votes by a 332-204 margin
- In the popular vote, Clinton is projected to win 49.3 percent to 43.3 percent.
- Among the battleground states, Trump will win Arizona, Iowa and Ohio. Clinton will triumph in Florida, Nevada and North Carolina.
Students were given leeway in how they made their predictions, with some analyzing professional polls, while others used demographic data to identify trends in voting. The predictions from the students were due on Oct. 24.
FiveThirtyEight reported that the student predictions based on popular vote were very close to its own projections on Oct. 4.
