The new Republican congressional leadership thinks the public wants them to help President Obama govern. This is a formula for utter disaster.
For example, leaders of the GOP are prepared to give Team Obama what is called Trade Promotion Authority. It amounts to a blank check to complete and ram through Congress on a take-it-or-leave-it basis something called the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Why anyone on Capitol Hill would think it a good idea to rubber-stamp any deal this president negotiates is beyond me. Think: Obama’s one-sided New START arms control deal with the Russians; his surrender to the Castros; or his utter collapse in negotiations allowing Iran to get the bomb.
We need a check-and-balance — not a blank check — on Obama’s secretly negotiated and sovereignty-sapping Pacific trade deal.
