MarketWatch's Reeves: Investment Ideas for 2015

By    |   Friday, 19 December 2014 04:09 PM

Major stock market indices are again approaching record highs, but that doesn't mean equities can't provide more opportunities next year, says MarketWatch columnist Jeff Reeves.

He offers several themes to keep in mind during 2015.
  • "U.S. valuations aren’t excessive," Reeves writes. "According to FactSet, the forward price-to-earnings ratio of the S&P 500 now is 16.2, the highest level since 2005. However, that reading is basically on par with the 15-year average, so this isn’t a sign for panic.
  • "Tech presents growth opportunity.
  • "Financials looking fit." Banks have vastly improved their financial health since the 2008-09 financial crisis.
  • "India looking up." The IMF and World Bank predict 6.4 percent economic growth for 2015.
  • "Global picture isn’t so bad.
  • "U.S. dollar will stay strong" amid U.S. economic strength.
  • "[Baby] boomers are a sure thing." That creates an opportunity for investing in countries that serve this demographic, such as healthcare and insurance companies.

Meanwhile, CNBC has published a survey on the investing habits of millionaires. It shows that millionaires have thrived "by investing in established brand names from within the market's largest sectors and by using broadly diversified mutual funds," according to CNBC.

"They accumulate their wealth by hitting a lot of singles and doubles," Tom Wynn, director of affluent research at Spectrem Group, which polled 500 millionaires for CNBC, told the news service.

"And to do that, they need to have a broad base of mutual funds to capture all of the sectors. In many ways, they are traditional with their investments."

Millionaires aren't averse to buying individual stocks, but they tend to regard this as their "play money" for risk-taking.
