FTC: Beware of 'Scam Artists' Claiming Cure for Ebola Virus

By    |   Thursday, 16 October 2014 03:04 PM

Various entities are coming forward to claim they have a cure for Ebola. Don't believe them, says the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

"Banking on fear, scam artists are making unsubstantiated claims that products containing everything from silver to herbal oils and snake venom can cure or prevent Ebola. Not so, says the FTC and the Food and Drug Administration," Colleen Tressler, a consumer education specialist for the agency, writes on the agency's website.

Health crises act as a petri dish for scams, she notes.

Bottom line: "There are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or drugs to prevent or treat Ebola," Tressler writes.

"Although there are experimental Ebola vaccines and treatments under development, these are in the early stages of product development, have not yet been fully tested for safety or effectiveness and the supply is very limited," she adds.

"There are no approved vaccines, drugs or products specifically for Ebola available for purchase online or in stores. No dietary supplements can claim to prevent or cure Ebola, according to the supplements industry," Tressler stresses.

"Health fraud trades on false hope. Learn how to evaluate claims for products related to your health."

The Ebola outbreak might ultimately put a dent in the economy, analysts say.

"Fear of contagion, very early, would lead to a reduction in people's willingness to travel, eat in restaurants, drink in bars and quite frankly do anything social," Andrew Zarnett, a New York-based analyst at Deutsche Bank, writes in a commentary obtained by Bloomberg.
