Benefits of Ginseng

Thursday, 23 September 2010 09:14 AM EDT

In both Chinese and Western medicine, ginseng has been considered a natural “remedy for conditions” characterized by emotional, digestive, and “cognitive problems.” Ginseng is available on the market in different types, potencies, and qualities. Therefore, the type, the dosage, and the potency should be determined beforehand to derive the optimum health benefits.

American ginseng works best for nervous and respiratory tract conditions, where Chinese ginseng or Korean ginseng benefits the circulatory system.

Below is a list of five ways in which ginseng is beneficial:

1.As an energy tonic- Chinese ginseng is used in traditional medicine as a stimulant to help improve energy and endurance. Recommended for people suffering from chronic fatigue, debility, and weakness, the use of ginseng improves vigor, vitality, and overall energy levels. Ginseng may be able to regulate metabolism and improve sports performance.

2. As a nerve relaxant and cognitive performance enhancer- The ginsenosides present in American ginseng have a “sedative and digestive” effect on the central nervous system. Often advised for stress management along with other herbs like gingko biloba, ginseng calms frayed and agitated nerves, restores mental clarity, and improves learning ability. Ginseng uses also include enhancing memory and improving mood.

3. As a blood sugar level normaliser- As a natural herbal remedy for diabetic patients, ginseng  lowers fasting blood glucose levels. Individual studies have shown that ginseng helps reinforce the body’s response to elevated blood glucose levels and improve the psycho-physical performance of diabetics.

4. As an immunity booster- The dried ginseng root extract works as adaptogens and immunity improving stimulants. Studies have shown people using ginseng have better immunity and less susceptibility towards colds and respiratory tract infections.

5. As herbal treatment for sexual dysfunction- Asian ginseng is recommended to facilitate penile erection and to improve copulatory performance and libido. The active ingredients in ginseng may induce vasodilatation of gonadal tissues and alter hormone secretion indirectly by affecting the central nervous system.

Ginseng should ideally be avoided by pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children in absence of proper “medical guidance.” Ginseng may modify the body’s response to certain blood thinners and cardiovascular drugs. It must be used by heart patients only after consultation.
