Most Common Symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 01:55 PM EDT

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have problems paying attention, are hyperactive, and have difficulty completing tasks.

According to medical researchers, children generally tend to exhibit ADHD symptoms before the age of seven.

Left untreated, children with ADHS may not fare well academically and suffer emotional instability that may lead to relationship problems later in life.

Here are the most common symptoms of ADHD:

Inattentiveness
Individuals with ADHD tend to make careless mistakes in school or at work. They may have trouble with paying attention to what is going on around them. When given tasks to perform, they are easily distracted and may not be able to complete them.

Learning and language disabilities
Being inattentive will naturally lead to learning and language disabilities. Children with ADHD will not be able to perform at the pace of their classmates. This can easily be misinterpreted as laziness.

Hyperactivity
While being hyperactive itself is not indicative of ADHD as most children are naturally hyperactive, it should not be ignored. When unprovoked, excessive fidgeting, endless talking, running around endlessly, and climbing on furniture, can be symptoms of hyperactivity related to ADHD.

Impulsiveness
Most children are impulsive, wanting to know more about what is happening around them. As a result, parents do not pay much attention to this ADHD symptom. But when inattentiveness and hyperactivity are also present with impulsiveness, then it is time to seek a professional opinion.

Behavioral problems
A child with behavioral problems may have difficulty making friends. Sudden emotional outbursts, being a recluse, and shyness are some of the other symptoms of ADHD.

If you suspect ADHD in your child, make sure he or she gets a very careful and thorough evaluation. Often learning and behavioral problems are misdiagnosed as ADHD.
