Selenium and Diet

Friday, 03 June 2011 11:53 AM EDT

Why include selenium in your diet?

Selenium should be an essential component of one’s diet because of the role selenium plays and its benefits including:
  • Selenium is an antioxidant which helps protect the body from harmful free radicals.
  • Selenium promotes a healthy liver and protects against various toxic elements and metals.
  • Selenium neutralizes smoke, fats, and alcohol.
  •  Selenium is necessary in the functioning of the thyroid.
Ways to include selenium in your diet include:

Eat foods that contain selenium like tuna, cod, Brazil nuts, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, and mushrooms. Some other sources that are rich in selenium and should be included in your diet are cod liver oil, shrimp, button mushrooms, calf’s liver, salmon, and snapper.

Including selenium in your diet becomes highly essential if you are suffering from selenium deficiency due to health conditions like hyperthyroidism. However, if you are not getting sufficient selenium through diet, going for prescribed selenium supplements would help.

Selenium Poisoning:
Our body requires selenium only in trace amounts. Excessive selenium intake is harmful and may be even fatal. Do not take selenium supplements without prescription.
