Wyoming State Abortion Laws: Quotes From Heated Debate

By    |   Monday, 10 August 2015 12:48 PM EDT

Debate about state restrictions to abortion has come up in the Wyoming legislature in recent years. The state has fewer restrictions on abortion than many others throughout the nation, ranking at No. 34 with six restrictions, The Washington Post reported.

Still, pro-life lawmakers in Wyoming have attempted to strengthen protections for the unborn, but without much success.

Most recently, in February 2015, a House committee in Wyoming killed a proposed bill that would require a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion so a woman could have a chance to review an ultrasound image.

Vote Now: Do You Support Tougher Regulations on Abortion Clinics?

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Tom Reeder, R-Casper, said it was his hope that viewing an ultrasound would give a woman the chance to "see what she is carrying is not just a blob of tissue," The Associated Press reported.

Here are some other quotes from the debate, according to the AP.

"Abortion is something that the law has permitted, but it's hardly something that we can promote as a social good. In most important decisions that you make in your life, don't you want at least a day to think about them?"
Donna Adler, a lobbyist for the Diocese of Cheyenne

"This bill gives the impression that women who become pregnant somehow lose the ability to think for themselves, that they are somehow incompetent, so the state needs to come in and help regulate or intervene in their thought process. To me, that's inappropriate."
Dr. Larry Meuli, a former Republican lawmaker

"The Legislature is not tasked with influencing the moral, ethical or medical decisions of the people of Wyoming. It's not this body's job to prevent people from making decisions that they might regret, or that other people might disagree with."
Elizabeth Hiatt of Laramie, who spoke out with a personal story, noting she and her husband discussed for more than a week “an agonizing decision” to terminate a pregnancy
