Worldwide Diabetes Rate Doubles

Monday, 27 June 2011 02:51 PM EDT

The number of adults suffering from Type 2 diabetes worldwide has more than doubled in the past 30 years, reports Fox News.

The study conducted by Imperial College of London and Harvard University analyzed data from more than 270 million people worldwide.

It was found that rates of diabetes remained constant or increased in every single area of the globe, and the greatest rise in diabetes rates was discovered in the Pacific Islands where one third of all women suffer from the disease.

The U.S. topped the list with the highest prevalence of the disease among developed countries.

One in ten adults currently suffers from Type 2 diabetes. Though increased life expectancy certainly accounts for a portion of rising diabetes rates, lifestyle factors like obesity are primary contributors to the dangerous statistic.
