In regard to its abortion laws, Wisconsin does more to protect life than most of its neighboring states. Of the four states bordering Wisconsin, only Michigan is ranked better by Americans United for Life.
In its national
2015 Life Life State Rankings, Americans United for Life listed Wisconsin at No. 18 based on measures the state has taken during the previous year to protect unborn children and its overall advances against abortion since the Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973. Michigan is listed at No. 15. Wisconsin's other neighboring states, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa, are listed at Nos. 24, 30, and 36 respectively.

In July 2015, Wisconsin passed a 20-week abortion ban that does not allow exceptions for rape, incest, or fetal anomalies. In passing the ban, Wisconsin joined 13 others states with similar laws on the books, but none of them are neighboring. Those states are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Wisconsin and neighboring Minnesota and Michigan have 24-hour waiting periods for a woman seeking an abortion. Illinois and Iowa do not have a waiting period.
All five states have physician and hospital requirements regarding abortion.
NARAL Pro-Choice America gave Wisconsin a D-plus on its choice-related laws. Nearby Illinois earned a B grade and Minnesota and Iowa earned a C-plus. Michigan received an F.
