Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine or thiamin, helps metabolize body fats and proteins and promotes a healthy liver, hair, skin, and eyes; it also maintains the nervous system and increases the overall efficiency of the brain.

Although available in meat, rice, cereals, legumes, and wheat germ, vitamin B1 can also be taken as a supplement. The vitamin helps avoid several diseases and disorders.

Some of the conditions vitamin B1 helps are listed below.

1. Vitamin B1 supplements help reduce swelling or burning sensations in the hands and feet, and difficulty breathing, both of which are symptoms characteristic of beriberi. B1 supplements also reduce confusion and involuntary or abnormal movement of the eyes.

2. Vitamin B, along with other proteins and vitamins like B2, B3, and A, may tremendously reduce the risk of cataracts and help in their treatment. The vitamin supplements also protect the lens of the eye and strengthen eye muscles.

3. Vitamin B1 can also treat Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a brain disorder characterized by a low-level of thiamine in the body. Its symptoms include memory loss, impairment, and nerve damage in the central and peripheral nervous system.
