Underage Tanning?

Tuesday, 28 June 2011 02:47 PM EDT

California legislators are currently debating a bill proposed by Sen. Ted Lieu that would make tanning bed use illegal for minors, reports PerezHilton.

As the law stands today, teenagers in California must be 14 years or older to indulge in the “fake bake.” But, growing concern for the safety of tanning beds is encouraging lawmakers to restrict tanning bed use even further.

The World Health Organization officially classifies tanning beds as  “carcinogenic” due to the cancer-causing rays they emit. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also warns of tanning bed use and other harmful ray exposure. “There is no such thing as a safe tan. The increase in skin pigment, called melanin, which causes the tan color change in your skin is a sign of damage.”

Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York are also considering bills to set a tanning bed minimum age of 18.
