UN Gun Ban: 7 Tweets That Show How Upset American Gun Advocates Are

Gun advocates continue to protest a UN gun ban after a global treaty regulating the international trade of weapons took effect on Christmas Eve in 2014.

The United Nations adopted the Arms Trade Treaty in April 2013 in hopes of monitoring the $85 billion industry and halting the flow of weapons to terrorists.

Countries around the world quickly began signing the UN gun ban, with the United States becoming the 91st nation to sign in September 2013.

The U.S., however, hasn’t ratified the bill — a move that would require a two-thirds vote from the Republican-controlled Senate. But 61 other nations have ratified the treaty, the UN says — well over the 50 needed for the gun ban to take force.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry insisted as he signed the bill that it won’t in any way diminish Americans’ Second Amendment rights.

That’s because it only regulates the export of weapons, supporters said, creating strict requirements for nations to review cross-border transfer of everything from firearms to attack helicopters.

Conservative leaders, gun advocates and the National Rifle Association remain unconvinced, and continue to voice concern over how the UN gun ban will impact rights at home, seek support for its revocation, and mock its effectiveness abroad.

Here are seven tweets expressing those concerns:
