Would-be parents in Great Britain will soon be able to buy tickets for £20 each to enter a “baby lottery” of sorts, reports the
Telegraph.
United Kingdom regulators gave the green light to charitable organization 'To Hatch’s' competition, which will give each month’s winner £25,000 worth of in-vitro fertilization treatments.
Profits from the lottery will be used in the charity’s programs, which offer free advice to couples having trouble conceiving.
“This demeans the whole nature of human reproduction,” said a representative of Comment on Reproductive Ethics. “Creation of human life should not be reduced to a public lottery. Instead of this, shouldn't more be spent on research into fertility problems?”
'To Hatch' says it came up with the idea only after dramatic government cuts made it even harder for couples to get information and treatments.
