8 Tricks You Can Play to Improve Your Memory

By    |   Friday, 03 June 2016 01:59 PM EDT

If you want to improve your memory and keep your brain sharp, there are tricks you can use to stimulate brain activity and function.

These eight tricks may help to boost brain power and improve your memory:

Neurosurgeon: This Brain Formula Saves Your Memory

1. The simple act of paying attention helps to improve memory. HelpGuide says when processing one piece of information, you need to stay focused on it for about eight seconds. Avoid distractions and process this information in a quiet spot.

2. Review the information you have learned throughout the day, as well as later. A person has an easier time retaining what was just learned by going over it.

3. Quit multitasking. This has become a well-known skill at many jobs, but it could slow a person down and make errors more likely, according to Dr. Joseph Mercola. He recommends staying focused on one task you are doing without worrying about other tasks until you can focus on each one of them.

4. Brain games are challenging to the brain and can improve its function. The brain can actually deteriorate if you don’t challenge it. There are plenty of websites and mobile apps for brain games, such as Lumosity. Spending at least 20 minutes a day on brain games can help improve the memory.

5. Mastering a new skill stimulates brain activity. Choose a skill that interests you, so it will keep your attention and maintain mental stimulation. Even little hobbies, such as knitting or digital photography, enhance memory function.

6. Mnemonic devices help you to remember things. This technique may include rhymes to remember people’s names or visualization, such as assigning an object in your mind to a place of business. For example, picturing a big smile might help people remember a dental appointment.

7. Including your body while performing mental tasks helps to stay focused, according to Entrepreneur. Practice good posture while learning, move around when you feel the need, or stand up and move around if you feel tired.

8. Explain new information or concepts to yourself, just as you would like someone else to explain them to you. You could also explain the new idea to someone else to help your own memory. Figure out in your mind how a new idea works and why it works, so it becomes clear in your mind.
