Nature lovers looking for Boston travel tips can still find ways to enjoy the outdoors in this busy city.

Here are seven places to enjoy in and around Boston.

Latest: What's Your Favorite Type of Vacation? Relaxing or Exploring?

1. Boston isn't necessarily known as a beach city, but a shuttle bus trip to Crane Beach will allow nature lovers the chance to enjoy the outdoors. Crane Beach offers swimming, outdoor recreational activities, and more than 5 miles of trails through the dunes to the beachfront. Catch a glimpse of the protected shorebirds or visit the Crane Wildlife Refuge.

2. Biking throughout Boston is great for sightseeing, including a view of city and bits of nature, such as parks and tree-lined streets.

The Minuteman Bikeway stretches 11 miles and allows bikers, roller bladers, joggers, and walkers. Pass by Spy Pond and Arlington’s Great Meadows. Or take advantage of the Hubway, the city’s bike-sharing network that allows you to arrange pickup and dropoff of bikes in the city.

3. Jamaica Pond in Boston’s Jamaica Plain is a pleasant place for sailboats, rowboats and kayaks. Joggers can run the 1.5-mile path around the pond. The pond is also stocked with fish for fishing enthusiasts. Visitors can rent boats, or skate on the pond during the wintertime. Various events are held throughout the year.

4. Boston Harbor is a nice spot to watch sailing vessels and ships of all sizes. Visitors can also go whale watching by booking a spot on boats that head out to sea to look at these beautiful mammals. Dress warmly and enjoy the snack bars or pack your own lunch. Some boats also have bars.

5. Fresh Pond Reservation includes a lake, ponds, streams, marshes, and woods. The water in the pond is used for the city’s drinking system, but the beautiful area has plenty of recreational activities with a scenic landscape. There’s also a golf course.

6. Boston Common is part of many travel tips during a stay in Boston. The Common provides some 50 acres of park space to enjoy nature or take in many recreational activities. Enjoy the beautiful sights of birds, grass, and trees or hop onto a swan boat for a slow glide over the waterway.

7. The Boston Nature Center & Wildlife Sanctuary is home to 150 species of birds and 40 species of butterflies. There are also more than 350 species of plants to observe. Located just outside of downtown Boston, the sanctuary provides trails to walk and enjoy the meadows and wetlands.
