In an article that he wrote for Red Letter Christians, a site that he founded, he made his feelings about having a happy childhood known when he wrote that, "It's never too late to have a happy childhood. In other words, it's never too late to become what you might have been."

Family Times reported a story that Campolo tells when people ask his wife what she does for a living. He explained that many people seemed to ignore her once she told people that she did not work outside the home. To make it more interesting, Campolo says that his wife began to answer by saying that, "I'm socializing two Homo sapiens in Judeo-Christian values so they'll appropriate the eschatological values of utopia. What do you do?"
Following a family Thanksgiving dinner in 2013, Campolo's son Bart had a surprising announcement for his family that, following his struggles in the wake of a 2011 bike accident, he was giving up his faith and was now an agnostic humanist.
Campolo's response to his son was equally surprising: "I'm sad because Christianity is my tribe, and I liked having you in my tribe."
