The movie, based on Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel of the same name, has received acclaim for its star studded cast, but sparked criticism for taking issues of race too lightly.
The film stars Emma Stone of “Easy A,” Viola Davis, and Octavia Spencer. “Any number of these performances may be remembered come awards season,” Jim Slotek of Jam! Movies said.
The film was depicted as “lived-in and genuine,” by Chris Vognar of the Dallas Morning News.
Critics argue that the film takes a much too light-hearted approach towards serious historical issues.
“ . . . Fairly typical Hollywood flattening of history, with powerful villains and disenfranchised heroes,” Karina Longworth of the Village Voice said of the film.
