Considered the second most populous state, Texas has plenty to offer families planning a staycation. From Austin, the live music capital of the world to Houston's Museum of Natural Science, the Lone Star State has a rich culture in art and a great educational scene everyone in the family can enjoy.

Here are seven fun things to do in Texas:

1. Museum of Natural Science: Located in Houston, this museum is one of the top 10 most attended museums in the country. Visitors can explore the the Hall of Ancient Egypt, an exhibit presenting artifacts that were collected during the early years of the 18th century. Other exhibits include the Earth Forum and the Vintage Texas Wildlife Dioramas.

2. The Houston Zoo: Spend the day exploring and interacting with various wild animals including the white rhino, a white alligator, seals and giraffes. A favorite attraction is the lion exhibit.

3. San Antonio Missions National Historical Park: This historical area stretches nine miles and contains four of the five Spanish frontier18th century missions. Discover the old buildings and learn about the the mission's rich history.

4. Morgan's Wonderland: Located in San Antonio, this fun amusement park offers plenty of activities for children and adults with special cognitive and physical needs. Many of the attractions are designed to be interactive for children with various abilities and disabilities. A one of a kind experience for the entire family.

5. Dallas World Aquarium: Families on a staycation can explore various endangered animals such as the Orinoco crocodiles, giant river otters and Antillean manatees. Several species of monkeys are part of the many conservation projects. The aquarium portion displays interesting marine life, including Japanese crabs, jellyfish, Leafy, Weedy and Ribbon seadragons.

6. Local Cabin Village: Located in Fort Worth, visitors can learn a bit of local history where actors dressed up in appropriate costumes and a collection of historic buildings illustrate life in mid-19th century Texas.

7. Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail: Located in Austin, the region offers scenic trails through lush green parks and peaceful lakes. It's a great place to bike, hike and run.
