This week, the first supernova in 25 years will be visible to the Earth, reports

The exploding white dwarf star was discovered by astronomers from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California, Berkeley, in the Pinwheel Galaxy which is located approximately 21 million light-years away from earth.
The supernova will be bright enough to be seen with a pair of binoculars, according to a press release from the Berkeley Lab. It should reach peak brightness Friday.
“Type la supernova are the kind we use to measure the expansion of the universe,” Mark Sullivan of Oxford University, stated. “Seeing one explode so close by allows us to study these events in unprecedented detail.”
