Some Believe 'Supermoon' Caused Japanese Catastrophe

Friday, 18 March 2011 02:02 PM EDT

Saturday night the largest full moon in 18 years will appear in the sky, but many fear this upcoming moon may have caused the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Japanese full moon Saturday
NASA has dispelled this myth, reporting that although the moon will pull tides an inch or more higher than usual, it does not trigger natural disasters.

The moon will be easiest to see Saturday when it’s near the horizon.
