Sunscreen Pill Being Tested

Wednesday, 31 August 2011 10:55 AM EDT

Researchers have found a compound that can be synthesized into a pill to possibly prevent sunburn and eye damage, reports Newser.

Coral from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has been found to yield a compound that protects both algae living in the coral and the coral itself from the sun’s damaging rays.

Researchers have been testing the compound in the lab to try and create a sunscreen pill.

“After taking the tablet you’d find the compound in your skin and eyes,” the project’s lead researcher explains. “There would have to be a lot of toxicology tests done first, but I imagine a sunscreen tablet might be developed in five years or so.”

The researcher noted that the compound could also be used to develop sun-resistant crops.
